Mourning

I was a quilt haphazardly sewn together
A chopped up, fragmented being
Sliced into pieces that were easy to chew

What if those pieces of me
Are actually pieces of you?

I don’t know what I did to be here,
Or what you did that made them tear you apart

It’s cruel, isn’t it,
That I tempt fate by constantly saying
That I don’t want to be here

You were stolen
Before your first breath
Before you felt the warmth of the sun on your skin
Before you heard our mother’s voice

Maybe your being was made of too much light
The universe wasn’t ready for you,
So it took you back and put me in your place

You didn’t deserve any of the mess
You would have been born into

Hooked nose, sunken eyes,
I reminded our grandparents too much of her

Maybe that’s why they didn’t care to see me

I am a manifestation
Of everything they never wanted

A reminder of everything
That could have been but never did

⋯
