I Was Always There

I tiptoe down the stairs
The wood croaks
As I descend deeper into the darkness

I strike a match and light a flame
Treading toward the edge of the room
I unveil the window to my soul

It is hammered shut

I begin to unravel a patch of nails
Piercing through the wood

If I don't set my soul free, who will?

My hands are gnawing at the frame
Until the last nail hangs loose

Creating a ripple of dust on the floor
I lift the window slowly
Only to uncover the breath of life
Still whispering inside of me
