Washington, D.C. is a city steeped in history, where the legacy of America comes to life at every corner. For a tourist with a passion for the past, it offers far more than what initially meets the eye. From its sweeping promenades lined with iconic monuments to the rich collection of Presidential artifacts and timeless architecture, the city tells a compelling story of the nation’s journey. Exploring Washington, D.C. was not just a visit—it was an unforgettable experience through the heart of American heritage. The Library of CongressThe Library of Congress was nothing short of spectacular. As soon as I stepped into the main lobby, I was awestruck by the sheer intricacy that surrounded me. Every inch, the walls, the ceilings, the fixtures, was adorned with ornate detail, unlike anything I had ever seen before. I learned that the building’s aesthetic was deliberately designed to impress European visitors, and it’s clear that no effort was spared in doing so.
It’s the kind of place where you could spend hours immersed in the craftsmanship, discovering hidden references to academic disciplines, great thinkers, and renowned artists woven into the architecture. The walls seemed to whisper centuries of wisdom. To me, the Library felt less like a building and more like a temple, one that pays reverent homage to the legacy of Western knowledge.

Philadelphia is a city where history and modern life blend seamlessly, creating an atmosphere unlike any other. Known as the birthplace of American democracy, its streets are lined with landmarks that tell the story of the nation's past—from Independence Hall to the Liberty Bell. But beyond its rich history, Philly offers an endless array of unique experiences, from its vibrant food scene to its art-filled neighborhoods. During my trip, I explored the city’s layers—walking through centuries-old sites, discovering hidden gems, and immersing myself in the energy that makes Philadelphia so special. An Ode to HistoryThis antique shop deserves to be recognized as a museum in and of itself. There are so many wonderfully unique and strange oddities in this shop. Whether you are looking for mourning jewelry made of hair, dentures, or Cracker Jack toys, Anastacia's Antiques most likely has it. All time ceases to exist when you are exploring inside of this hidden gem. I easily could have spent hours scavenger hunting. I made a conscious decision to focus on the jewelry cabinet as to not overwhelm myself. Stated by Anastacia herself, one of the things she always hears about her store is people saying that they could live there - I can confirm I am one of those people.
I ended up purchasing a beautiful, silver brooch with mythological cut-outs. Unfortunately there was no marking on the back to indicate the designer, but I knew I had found something that would always remind me of my trip to Philadelphia. This place is perfect for a macabre souvenir! I was eager to continue the tradition of visiting historic homes in 2024. There were still so many homes that I needed to visit and see, and last year's list felt like the tip of the iceberg. Here is a comprehensive review of the historic homes I visited this year. I hope my reflections inspire you to want to visit these homes, and that it sparks your curiosity for history - hopefully you get to transport back in time through these places! Glenview Mansion transports you back in time to the Gilded Age. There is so much more than what meets the eye when you first gaze upon the structure of the house. At first glance, the mansion appeared to be just like any other mansion that I had seen - dramatic, eye-catching, and exuding immense wealth. However, upon entering the mansion I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure whether it was the colorful tiles in the hallway, or the high ceilings that gave the space freshness and life. There were so many interesting objects including a Tiffany and Co. grandfather clock, a fireplace with restored story book inspired tiles, or a 1800s recliner. Everything about the space felt captivating, considering that it's also connected to the Hudson River Museum. You can tell that a lot of effort went into restoring the mansion, and that so many people wanted to tell the story of the time period. | Rating: 8/10 Chicago was so much more than I had expected. I spent my time in Chicago dedicating myself to exploring the historical and artistic expressions of the city. There's so much to see if you're mindful; small details and designs that almost feel like little visual gifts from history. The entire downtown area is reminiscent of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Here are some of the things that inspired me while I was there. A History of Art Deco OpulenceThe Art Deco architectural style of Chicago is something you can't miss as you explore the city's streets. There are old, historic buildings everywhere with gorgeous detailing and motifs that harken back to a time of opulence and gaiety. What's even more impressive than the outside of these structures are their insides, with grand lobbies that make you feel like you've been transported back in time. These lobbies paint a vivid picture of Chicago's prosperous and rich history, illustrating how the city and its inhabitants valued aesthetic beauty. The Chicago Architecture Center has an amazing list of landmark lobbies that are definitely worth visiting.
Enveloped in red rocks, you can't help but feel inspired. There is an overwhelming sense of something greater than yourself, an inexplicable feeling that like nature, you are limitless. Perhaps if you tune in hard enough, you might find yourself touching the sky like these mountains.
